Curriculum Framework

  1. Our school is vertically grouped into Years 1 & 2, Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6, providing a bilingual curriculum based on a two year cycle in English and Portuguese.
  2. We follow the British (Cambridge) Curriculum with Literacy, Numeracy, Science and Humanities being taught in English. Pupils in year 6 have their SAT's exams in English, Maths and Science at the beginning of June.
  3. Supplementary subjects - Portuguese Culture and Traditions and aspects of Drama, Music, Design Technology, Project Work, Food Technology and Physical Education are taught in Portuguese.
  4. By promoting and building on language skills, children are not only given the opportunity to learn an additional language, they are at an academic advantage over monolingual children.
  5. Recognition of the Portuguese culture and traditions form an integral part of the daily activities to encourage cross-cultural awareness and tolerance.
  6. PSHE is taught in different ways, including drama, role play and special assemblies.
  7. We provide additional opportunities and experiences that enhance learning with visits to museums, galleries, residential trips and inter-sport competitions.
  8. Clubs and activities based on interest and need are held every day after school.

Our curriculum design includes courses that are stimulating for both students and teachers in a bilingual environment. The knowledge and skills developed during the primary years should ensure a smooth transition from primary to secondary schooling, and in particular for those students wishing to progress to the International General Cambridge Secondary Education (IGCSE) qualification. It is anticipated that pupils who have been following the Bilingual Programme since primary years will have the necessary confidence and skills to participate in the international programme at secondary and higher levels.
